In the years since the invention of the Internet and the Web, data has become the most important resource of both organizations and individuals. The rapid and consistent growth of information, entitled "information revolution" or "the digital revolution", has changed economy, society, education and technology. The information revolution has a great impact on the communication between humans, on the way of thinking, on the world of employment and on the leisure culture. It produces many challenges in data storage, information retrieval, privacy & security, data processing & analysis and visualization to users. Nowadays, buzzwords, such as big data, cloud server, data mining and the Internet of things, are used in the daily language.
The department of information systems at the University of Haifa, founded in October 2002, takes an active part in the training of professionals and researchers in this age of information revolution. The department offers a variety of three-year undergraduate programs focusing on the technological aspects of data processing and analysis, and information systems development. All programs provide BSc degrees. Some programs combine topics from other University departments such as economics, computer science, cognition, or even humanities. Our graduates successfully work in high-tech and low-tech industries, in roles such as: requirements engineers, data analysts and business intelligence systems developers, information systems analyzers and developers, assimilators of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems in organizations, project managers, marketing and sales persons of information systems, quality control personnel and others. The studies include practical experiences in tutorials and labs, as well as in annual projects of information systems development for industry and different organizations.
Graduate programs (both for MSc and PhD degrees) promote high-quality research in a wide range of topics: business processes, decision support systems, software engineering, human aspects of software engineering, business intelligence, text mining, computer vision, human-computer interaction and visualization, big data, peer production, medical and biological information systems, and more. The research theses are done under the personal guidance and supervision of a department member. Research results are published in high-quality venues – including international conferences and journals.
